Did you know that TikTok was the most downloaded app in 2021? It received 656 million downloads. That’s over 100 million downloads more than the runner-up, Instagram, which was downloaded 545 million times in 2021. You may think of TikTok as a platform solely for Gen Z to post dancing videos but over the last few years, it has developed into so much more! With the launch of in-app shopping in 2021, it has become even more essential that brands learn how to use and utilise the app.

It’s no good just making a profile and posting, you need to find a way to reach the right people with your content to turn them into customers. One way of increasing your organic reach is by using hashtags. Below we are going to explore how to choose the best hashtags for your TikTok posts.

What are TikTok hashtags?

A hashtag is a # symbol, followed by words, acronyms, phrases, numbers, or sometimes even emoji. (Think #christmas or #loveisland).

TikTok users add hashtags to video captions in order to help their content be categorised and found by people with similar interests. Importantly, these hashtags are clickable. If you click on a hashtag, you’ll be taken to a search page showing you other content that has also been labelled with the same hashtag.

Why use TikTok hashtags?

Hashtags are important to use on TikTok because they can extend your reach beyond your followers. Hashtags can help the TikTok algorithm decide who would be most interested in seeing your content on their For You page (FYP), learn what a FYP is here. As of January 2022, the hashtag “fyp,” was the most used hashtag on TikTok, amassing over 18.57 trillion views across posts using it. Hashtags also allow your content to be discovered by people interested in a particular topic. For instance, if I want to watch some videos about cocktail recipes, I can just search for videos tagged #cocktail recipe. I can then scroll my way through cocktail making videos for the rest of the night.

If TikTok users have a continued interest in a specific topic then they can follow specific hashtags. This means brands using this hashtag can wind up in their feed even if they aren’t following their account directly. This is how hashtags can also help build online communities and land a new audience on your brand’s TikTok page.

How to find the right hashtags for your business?

1. Take inspiration from your competitors

You don’t want to copy exactly what your competition is doing but it is important to be aware of what others are doing within your industry. This may give you some inspiration to try using certain hashtags you may not have considered before. 

Not only do you want to get some ideas for what you should be doing but also what isn’t working and what you should avoid. This stops you from battling head-to-head for the same hashtag audience.

2. Consider your audience’s hashtag habits

After exploring your competitors’ hashtag usage you may want to look at what hashtags their audience are using or following as well as your own audience’s hashtag activity. This gives you the chance to tap into existing TikTok communities and expand your audience. So allot yourself some time to comb through your top followers’ videos and get some hashtag inspiration from there too!

If you’re really looking to dive deep you can also look at who your followers are following and which hashtags they’re using. This allows you to take a step back and explore your industry from your audience’s perspective.

3. Create your own brand hashtag

Using pre-existing hashtags is super important but don’t forget that you also have the opportunity to start your own branded TikTok hashtag too! By doing this you can gain a community around your brand. Anyone using or interested in using your product/services can search your hashtag. This way they can find all the content they need in one place.

4. How to reach the most people with hashtags on TikTok

Just because there are unlimited amount of hashtags for you to use, doesn’t mean you should use them all. 

It is important to select a mixture of the top trending/popular hashtags and niche ones too. If you use just the trending ones you’ll get lost amongst a sea of content and might never be found. While fewer people are searching for your niche hashtags, the people who are looking are going to be more interested in your content.

If you run out of characters in the caption of your post, here’s a little tip: add even more hashtags in the comments.
